The Plate Tower

I was built in the years 1401–1410 between two older and more honourable towers – the Ropehill and Epping towers. I was named after the tower chief Herbord Plate.

There is sometimes an argument about whether I have a horseshoe shaped cross section, typical of the towers of Tallinn, or if I can be called almost circular. My base plan is visible from Laboratory Street from the side of the city edge and it can be clearly seen that a segment has been cut out of the circle. For a long time, I have been in the hands of the military as well as standing empty, waiting for tenants. Sometimes, especially in summer, exhibitions are held on my first floor.
